Kuta was the very first place I landed when I touched down in Baliāand to be honest, I didnāt have a clue what to expect. But now, after a few trips and countless sunburns, itās become my unofficial home base whenever I start or wrap up a Bali getaway.
Itās the perfect place to start or end your tripājust a 15-minute drive from the airport, packed with energy, and always full of surprises. Thereās something about the mix of beach life, chaotic charm, and comfort food that hits just right after a flight or before heading off to explore the islandās quieter corners.

Why I Come Back to Kuta
Letās be realāKuta isnāt some sleepy, undiscovered beach village. Itās loud, itās touristy, itās always on. But thatās exactly what makes it fun.
- Super close to the airport (which makes planning a breeze)
- Tons of budget-friendly food and hotels
- A bit of everything: waves, nightlife, shopping, culture
š Traveler Tip: If itās your first time in Bali, spend your first night here. Itās the perfect place to adjust, get your bearings, and feel the islandās pulse.
My Favorite Things to Do in Kuta
1. Learn to Surf at Kuta Beach š
Kuta Beach is where I had my first surf lessonāand also where I swallowed half the ocean. Worth it? 100%.
I booked my session just a few hours in advance via Klook and chose a highly-rated local school called 27 Surf Bali Kuta Beach. For just SGD $15 / USD $11, I got a 90-minute one-on-one lesson with a super chill instructor. It was beginner-friendly, and after just 10 minutes of practice on the sand, I was out in the water trying to stand up (spoiler alert: I did!).
What to Bring:
- Swimsuit & change of clothes
- Towel
- Bottled water
- A bit of cash for snacks/coconut water on the beach
- Sunscreen (trust me!)
The school provides all the gear, a rinse-off area, and basic storage (no lockers though, so leave valuables at the hotel). Thereās also a photographer snapping action shots, which youāll receive via Google Drive a day or two later. Oh, and do not wear a watchāmy instructor said they often get lost to the sea!
āļø Surf tip: Go early (7ā8am) or mid-afternoon (1ā2pm) for gentler waves. Avoid evening swellsātheyāre stronger and not beginner-friendly.
ā ļø Reality check: While the surf is fun, the beach itself can be quite dirty, especially near the shoreline. Loads of trash, sadly. Be cautious if you plan to swim.

2. Watch the Sunset š
Kuta is famous for its fiery sunsets, especially between 5:30ā6:30 PM. I always show up 30 minutes early, grab a drink from one of the beach vendors, and sink into the sand for natureās evening showāfrom golden hues to soft lavender skies.
If youād prefer to watch it with a drink in hand and sand-free feet, head to GIOI Ocean Gourmet, just a short walk from Kuta Beachās main gate. From the 2nd floor balcony, youāll get a postcard-worthy view of the beach, palm trees, and glowing horizon.
That said, be warned: Kuta Beach is not the cleanest, so I usually avoid walking barefoot or letting my feet soak in the sea. Pretty to look at, but not always the best for a dip.

3. For a Cleaner Sunset: Head to Jimbaran Beach šļø
If you want a more romantic and cleaner sunset spot, take a quick ride to Jimbaran Beachājust 15 minutes from Kuta. Itās often ranked among the top 10 sunset beaches in the world, and I totally get why.
Picture this: golden sands, seafood BBQs lining the shore, live music in the background, and the sun melting into the ocean. Heaven.
You can pick a restaurant that suits your budget or, for an authentic experience, head to Kedonganan Fish Market, buy your seafood fresh, and take it to a nearby restaurant for grilling. Processing costs are cheap (~IDR 15K/kg + 3% service fee), and the view? Unmatched.

4. Hop on the Beer on Wheel!
One of the most unforgettable (and slightly tipsy) ways to explore Kuta is by hopping on this mobile party ā the iconic Beer Bus that cruises through the lively streets of Kuta and Legian.
Picture this: sipping on unlimited ice-cold beers, grooving to upbeat tunes, and watching the scenery shift from bustling street scenes to stunning Bali ocean views . You can chat, sing, and laugh with fellow travelers from all around the world ā it’s like a moving party with the best vibes ever!
Hereās whatās included in the experience:
- šŗ Unlimited ice-cold drinks (yes, really!)
- š„¤ Soft drinks, water & snacks
- š§ Take-home beer cooler or cup holder (as a souvenir!)
- š¶ Free Wi-Fi and phone chargers on board
š Duration: Around 2 hours
š° Cost: IDR 570k per person (alcohol-free options available, and kids 10+ are welcome!)
š Departure times: Every 30 minutes from 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM daily
š Pickup Point: Jl. Raya Legian No.210, Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia
Whether youāre starting your Bali adventure or winding down your trip, this rolling beer bus is such a fun way to soak in the local vibes ā highly recommend giving it a spin! (here is their website!)

5. Shop in Kuta!
- Beachwalk Shopping Center: Modern, breezy, and right by the beach. Perfect for global brands, local souvenirs, or a %Arabica coffee break.

- Krisna Oleh Oleh Bali: A great stop for souvenirsāhuge, affordable, and super organized. I went to the one across from Keranjang, which spans two massive shopping floors inside a five-story building. Prices were way better than what I saw in Ubud or Canggu, and everything is clearly labeledāno haggling needed.
They sell everything from snacks and coffee to clothes, wooden crafts, and skincare. I spent a whole afternoon wandering around and picked up fridge magnets (just over IDR 1,000 for a set!), bracelets, wooden dĆ©cor, and even coconut oil for under IDR 30,000. Just a heads-up: the trendy hair serum was pricier than expected, so you might want to skip that. They take Visa tooāsuper convenient.

- Bintang Supermarket & Grandlucky: For local groceries, snacks, and Bali-made gifts.

6. Get a Massage
I got a massage almost every day in Bali because… why not? Itās affordable and relaxing.
- Marsya Bali: Close to the beach, open late, IDR 100Kā200K. Private rooms with good oil massage options.
- Febriās Spa: Conveniently near the airportāgreat if you’re squeezing in one last spa before your flight.
- Theta Spa: A premium option with ocean views and full shower facilities.
Note: Unlike Thai massages, most Balinese massages use oils, and you’ll be asked to undress. If youāre shy, donāt worryācurtained rooms offer plenty of privacy.
š½ļø My Go-To Food & Drink Spots in Kuta
- Fat Chow: Asian fusion. Their leaf-wrapped grilled chicken and spicy Tom Yum are my go-tos.
- Crumb & Coaster: Instagram-famous brunch spot. Smoothie bowls that actually taste as good as they look.
- Nuriās Warung (Seminyak): Iconic BBQ pork ribsāmessy, tender, unforgettable.
- ME VUI: When Iām over Indonesian food, I head here for refreshing lemongrass pho.
- Sushi Hiro (in Beachwalk): Surprisingly high-quality Japanese food. The sashimi is fresh, and the grilled ox tongue is a standout!

š” Food tip: Prices are usually cheap, but expect an extra tax and service fee at most restaurants. No extra tipping required.

āļø Final Thoughts
Kuta is messy. Itās loud. Itās not perfect. But itās realāand thatās why I love it. Thereās a kind of magic here that you canāt quite explain until you experience it for yourself.
So if youāre landing in Bali soon, donāt skip it. Throw on your flip-flops, leave your expectations at the airport, and let Kuta surprise you. You just might fall for the chaos like I did.
